Artists 4 Israel activity with WIZO
A wonderful and moving activity involving WIZO and Artists4Israel, an organization of American artists that works to raise awareness of Israel via art and education, took place recently.
Artists 4 Israel created a new therapy kit to help prevent and heal PTSD and is now proving effective in treating all kinds of youth trauma.
The therapy comes in the form of a compact box filled with art therapy activities - the Healing Arts Kit. Each activity is simple enough for parents and teachers with no training to lead restorative exercises, and even has many activities children can do on their own.
The Healing Arts Kit is a first aid kit for mental distress in children. The activities are deceptively simple, but each is designed to take advantage of the latest research to help prevent, or alleviate, trauma.
The treatment was brought to Israel by WIZO and is the culmination of intensive coordination between leading child psychologists and art therapists within Israel and the United States and the US and Israel-based non-profit Artists 4 Israel which designed and manufactures the kits with design elements from leading global street artists.
Representatives of Artists4Israel distributed the art therapy kits to children at risk, and to children in WIZO day care centers in the and in the south, who suffered from the rocket attacks during operation Protective Edge. The kits are meant to help the children heal from the traumatic influences of the missiles falling sand to give them a feeling of security. Our staff members report that the children enjoyed using the kits and had break time activities with them that helped them tremendously.
WIZO and Artists 4 Israel have now decided to bring the Healing Arts Kit to the troubled children that WIZO helps on a day-to-day basis. The same treatment found to be effective for PTSD also helps children whose sense of security has been shattered not by rockets; but by physical abuse, molestation, emotional neglect, and broken homes.
"These A4I Healing Arts Kits are another layer of caring for Israeli children," says Hila Stern, Executive Director of WIZO New York, "providing them with tools to overcome the trauma that they live with on a daily basis."
